Spell check causes programs to crash [SOLVED]

Postby mojoman » February 10th, 2011, 9:22 am

Hi all,

Running Wheezy 64-bit I noticed that Iceweasel, OO writer and Abiword crashes when I use spell check (i.e. when I right-click on a word that is underlined in red). I tried starting them from CLI but it don't give any output (except Abiword which blurts out "aborted"). I started iceweasel in very verbose mode and I got segmentation fault as only output.

Now, I assume these programs call the same spell-checker, as they all crash in the same way. I've googled a bit but couldn't find anything useful.

Anyone else having the same problem? Anyone know of a solution (besides learning to spell of course).

Thanks. I'll just have to think before I write for now and wait for the packages to be un-broken. In case I don't use any big words in my posts you'll know why.

Could you downgrade the spell checkers to Squeeze for the while being? Maybe the dependencies will work.

I have not tried that. Let us know how it works.

Sorry, I'm neither on Wheezy, nor Sid. But:

Iceweasel --> has spell checking via xulrunner, which uses Hunspell, and Wheezy needs libhunspell >= 1.2.11, which is the same in Squeeze. That way you covered IW and Icedove (and everything else that runs on xulrunner).

OpenOffice --> has the package hunspell-dictionary as a suggest, and no version is really given. So I don't see why the version from Squeeze wouldn't work.

Abiword --> is using aspell; in the same version in Wheezy as in Squeeze, but it's further progressed in Sid.

etc.

Unless, of course, some dep. of both hunspell and aspell is the culprit (e.g. the C libraries are common to them).

Try a dry run downgrade. If it works, try the real thing and try to check spelling. Bon chance!

Not sure, aptitude tells me that both stable and testing uses aspell 0.60.6-4 and myspell 1:3.2.1-2. Sid got newer versions though. I'll try them on for size later tonight and report back.

Using versions from sid. No good, still crashes.

Any other ideas anyone?
