Lost all files!!

Hi, I'm running LMDE/Cinnamon and had a system hiccup last night. On restarting and logging in as usual, I was given a completely new profile - new desktop and everything.

All my files and settings no longer exist!

From a look at disk usage, it appears all files are still present - somewhere - however a find on the disk locates nothing.

How can I restore my profile?

Automatic updates? Might have moved you to stretch. But who knows. LMDE really isn't Debian anymore . . . (nothing that mint/ubuntu touches is). Can't you just restore from your backup?

Yes, I can (for the data). It's just a bit of a pain to restore all system settings, stuff like that. Put everything in the right place.

If worst comes to worst, this is what I'll do.

I just can't believe it would execute what was effectively an uncommanded rm *

LMDE has it's own forums: https://forums.linuxmint.com/

You may find more relevant help/info there.
