Debian Wheezy with gnome shell.
I would like to move the close button to the left side of the window.

How do I do it?

run dconf-editor
navigate to org > gnome > shell > overrides
select 'button layout' in the right pane
click on :close and change it to close:
press enter and you should see changes take effect

The colon position determines which side the buttons are on.

if desired, this is also a good opportunity to add minimize and maximize buttons
:minimize, maximize,close

Very clever way to get folks over to DUF.
