How To Run Installed Package

Postby llewellen » April 10th, 2018, 5:22 am

I installed standard 9.4.0 with Gnome DE and now want to change to Budgie DE. I found it in Synaptic, went through the various steps there, and clicked Apply. No error messages. I can see the various files sitting in /usr/lib/ but I can't get Budgie in place as my DE. Even after a restart it's still Gnome. What am I overlooking in my newbie state? Thank you.

There should be a way to select the session when you're at the login window.

To change the default, probably
Code: Select all
update-alternatives --config x-session-manager
(as root)

sounds like you have auto login enabled , I think Gnome uses GDM:

(without automatic login enabled , it should ask which one you want)

Thank you. I did have auto login enabled. I disabled that, shut down and logged in again. I had overlooked a tiny gear icon next to the Sign In button. Clicked on the icon and a drop down menu appeared which allowed me to select the Budgie DE. Shutdown and logged back in and the DE stayed as Budgie.

Now I can't get Budgie to accept my background and lockscreen selections. They show up in Settings>Backgrounds but when I click on my choices to highlight them and then click Select, Budgie doesn't remember them and remains at its default background.
