Debian 10 Buster - Rrefractasnapshot decompression error

Postby paulhoffusa » July 9th, 2019, 3:35 pm

First of all thank you for making the refracta tools. :) I've been using similar tools since the original remastersys tool was created.
I used refractasnapshot previously in Debian 9 with no issues. I did a fresh Debian 10 install with details below and got a Decompression error.
I patched the refractasnapshot script with code changes shown below and was able to get around the decompression error and create the iso image but it failed to boot. I'm pretty sure the parameters I used on the compression or decompression were wrong as I googled examples to try to figure it out. It looks like in Debian 10 there is a new compression type for the .img file as shown below. Can anyone give me the correct parameters that will create the iso and boot it properly from a clean Debian 10 install thank you.

P.S. In case your wondering ieprog in a script I wrote to auto install any program I need from outside the Debian standard repos with all required prereqs. I included output to show ver numbers of the programs and system info in case you needed more info.

What error message are you getting? What's in /var/log/refractasnapshot.log?

I just tried it manually with the commands from the script. I unpacked and repacked /boot/initrd.img-4.19.0-5-amd64 in devuan beowulf (same kernel as debian buster) and got no errors. I then rebooted using that initrd. No problems.

I ran it again using the original script and checked the log file it said the updatedb command couldn't be found. I ran a 'sudo apt-get install mlocate' then ran 'sudo updatedb' in terminal no error. Then re-ran refractasnapshot showing program output then log file contents below ... Still get the same Decompression error.

This may take a moment while the program checks for free space.

This is the distribution name that will appear in the boot menu for the
live image. You can change it to something else, or you can blank this,
and the the menu entries will just say "GNU/Linux <kernel-version>"

Enter, erase or change distro name: Debian

Running updatedb...

That would be uncompressed. Where'd you get that initrd?

And then you're compressing it:
Code: Select all
<    elif [ "$COMPRESSION" = "cpio archive" ]; then
<       find . | cpio --create --format='newc' | gzip -c > ${work_dir}/iso/live/${initrd_image##*/}

If you want to create another ASCII cpio archive (SVR4 with no CRC) leave out the compression. (I used shorthand form of your options.)
Code: Select all
find . | cpio -o -H newc > ${work_dir}/iso/live/${initrd_image##*/}

I just booted with one made this way.

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cu ... e-CD-1.iso is the iso file I was using and selected expert install and changed XFCE to LXDE wm then used it to install in VirtualBox. It takes quite a while to rerun the snapshot and retest as on dual core for VM. Starting it now.

I used the netinstall iso and installed just the standard system utilities in virtualbox yesterday.
https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cu ... etinst.iso

The initrd.img in the installed system is gzip compressed.

It's like that in the xfce live-iso, too.
(torrent file) https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cu ... so.torrent

Edit: If you run the snapshot again, please start it with the -d option or set it to debug mode in the config file. (I thought I made that the default.) You get a more verbose log that way.

Got 'Bad file number' from file /live/initrd.img as an error message when trying to boot the created iso now. Any ideas?

Re: Debian 10 Buster - Rrefractasnapshot decompression error

Postby paulhoffusa » July 10th, 2019, 2:23 am

The only special thing thing I did after install was update and upgrade all packages but I don't think that changed the kernel version at all. Then I deleted the libreoffice packages and added the mono repo and installed a few other packages. Could any of this have messed up the /initrd.img file? I'm trying figure out how it would be uncompressed when you mentioned it should be compressed.
Would it help if I did a complete reinstall of Debian and didn't upgrade or delete any packages just install min packages to get refractasnapshot working to see if that resolves the problem?
