New, new Refracta isos

Postby fsmithred » April 18th, 2018, 1:45 pm

Refracta-9.0 Beta isos based on Devuan ASCII (=Debian Stretch).
xfce, eudev, elogind, sysvinit, and a bunch of other goodies.
Still fits on a CD. (I left some apps out.)
https://sourceforge.net/projects/refrac ... s/testing/

New installer features:
- both cli and gui installers will do bios or uefi install
- support for gpt disks with bios boot (warns if you don't have bios_grub partition)
- support for full-disk encryption (encrypted /boot directory)

The first amd64 iso has been replaced. (first one: refracta9_xfce_amd64_beta2-20180418_0309.iso)
It didn't get the new gui installer, and the cli installer is faulty.*

Corrected in refracta9_xfce_amd64_beta2-20180419_2114.iso

* There's an erroneous 'fi' on line 294.
sudo nano +294 /usr/bin/refractainstaller and delete the fi. There's also one on the line above that must stay. Doesn't really matter which one goes or stays, but you need one.
Also, there's a bug that will show up if you make a separate /home partition and change the user name.
Both of these problems are fixed in the newer iso (2018-04-19)

The amd64 iso is missing /etc/default/grub. You can still install it and boot, but the entry will just say "GNU/Linux" instead of Refracta GNU/Linux.
Code: Select all
apt-get --reinstall install grub-efi-amd64

Before I reinstall, I'd like to ask whether a new stable .iso is anywhere near being released? Thanks in advance for any reply.

No, there are no new xfce isos yet. I still haven't figured out why unprivileged users can start synaptic and gparted without authentication. If that doesn't matter to you, use the beta2 isos. Note that I forgot to add the usual thunar custom actions.

Also missing is mate-system-tools. That package no longer exists, and I'm not sure where to get the missing parts. They don't seem to be in mate-utils, and mate-control-center wants to pull in mate-desktop. So, dealing with users and groups, time/date and whatever else was included in the tools must be done on command-line.

You motivated me to get off my butt and work on refracta isos. New isos are coming soon. I'm calling them beta3, because the synaptic problem is still there, but synaptic is now installed.

One more time...

beta3: https://sourceforge.net/projects/refrac ... s/testing/

2018-09-12 New isos: xfce4, amd64 and i386
- Fixed/updated accessibility theme.
- Geany replaces medit.
- Added xsane, sane-utils, libsane-extras, synaptic package manager.
- Added some thunar custom actions.
- Fixed installer help.
- Added netdev and scanner to default user groups.

Synaptic starts without authentication, but that only seems to be for the primary user. It wouldn't start for a second user, even when the second user started synaptic-pkexec from terminal and entered the root password when requested. You can still start it from a terminal as root by running 'synaptic'. (Without the pkexec part.)

Tell me what's broken so I can fix it and be done with ascii. I want to start working on beowulf.

Alright. Haven't used Refracta in many years. What are these iso's for? I'm specifically looking for Refracta Snapshot. Is that still available/working? Thanks in advance. Glad to see it's still going.

Hi, and welcome back. Yeah, we're till kickin'.

These are the standard refracta xfce isos, pretty much the same since squeeze, with the usual refracta tools included. (refractasnapshot, refractainstaller, refracta2usb). They're built from devuan ascii (= debian stretch/stable). They boot and install on bios or uefi.

If you just want the tools, the packages are in the tools directory on the sourceforge site. Take the latest versions even if the numbers don't match.
