What's going on with http://www.linuxforums.org?  Topic is solved

Postby BowCatShot » March 19th, 2016, 1:10 pm

Every time that I try to go there I get an error message saying that the site has been corrupted. Are they not going to address their issues and get back online? Have they given up? Wtf?

What I get is:

Reported Attack Page!
This web page at www.linuxforums.org has been reported as an attack page and has been blocked based on your security preferences.

I'm not looking any farther :)

Thanks for responding, Pick2. That's what I get too. This is unfortunate because I thought that was a pretty good site.

Hi all,

I think this topic should be re-posted or moved to the Security/Privacy Related category.

The Google Transparency Report regarding the current status of the linuxforums site provides some important details: https://www.google.com/transparencyreport/safebrowsing/diagnostic/index.html?hl=en-US#url=http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/

It appears the website has been hacked, and injected with malware, such that it could infect visitors who stop by... a kind of "drive by" attack. Moreover, apparently some users are being re-directed to linuxforums so it appears to be a "multi-pronged" strategy of attack. That said, it is comforting to know that Google is looking out for us and has our back --so to speak.

I predict this website will be cleaned -up and running in a day or two once the owners look at the situation. Then again, it may take a longer period to resolve this situation given it is currently the weekend.

Hi everybody once again,

Here is yet another Update:

At this time, I see that linuxforums is down once again.... so whatever measures were taken earlier in the past day to restore the website have fallen short of success.

I am speculating that either the website is under attack with a new variant of malware, or, the original malware is more sophisticated than what the troubleshooters realized following the initial attack.

I don't know much about the site, but it's wholly ad funded as I recall, I posted there a few years back and complained about all the thread locking which goes on and was pretty much told, in so many words, to fuck off and start my own forum...

But they are using the proprietary vBulletin software and would need to keep that paid up and updated, as the subscription can just run out. Websites do get cracked, fact of life really. It could happen here, but in all honesty they wouldn't really gain much... we'd just have to contact the host and restore everything and it would be a pain in the arse...

Linuxforums.org doesn't strike me as a great target either, so probably someone happened to notice they had a particular vulnerability and decided to have a go, because they could...
