firmware-linux-nonfree and screen corruption

Hello, installed Debian Jessie today and upon installing the firmware-linux-nonfree the screen gets completely corrupted. There's lines and triangles in various colours and broken fonts. It looks the same in GDM3 and the fallback mode aswell.

I suppose I don't really need the firmware, but the graphic cards acceleration is not working without it (the fan is noisy and it's a bit laggy too without), so I'm asking here if anyone know a solution to it.

Which graphics card do you have? Run lspci -v

I see that you installed firmware-linux-nonfree. Did you also install firmware-linux-free?

Consider removing the firmware-linux-nonfree temporarily just for peace of mind and eyeballs. Something didn't get loaded or configured.

What did you install from? CD? USB? Where did you get it?

Try doing apt-get update && apt-get upgrade to see if it brings in anything.

Thanks again. I did install the non-free one and it was when removing it (after many tries of reinstalling Debian) I noticed it was the cause of the screen corruption. I've also tried to install the free one both separately and together with non-free. I've been trying to update aswell.

Debian itself I downloaded from the official site, the firmware I got from the repositories; either ftp.se.debian.org/debian or security.debian.org

firmware-linux-nonfree is supposed to make things better but it's making things worse. Unfortunately, I don't know what is doing that. All I can do is make suggestions. What was on that computer before you installed Debian? Windows or another Linux?

Sometimes, with older machines, it helps to use nomodeset. Look at this. Scroll down to How to temporarily set kernel boot options on an installed OS. Does it help? If so make nomodeset permanent.

The firmware is required for DRI acceleration. Without it the GPU does not have any kind of acceleration as far as I recall (?). So that's the reason why you don't see display corruption/artefacts when it's not installed.

Try the following:

1) Reinstall the non-free firmware reboot and allow the display manager or X to start up (or startx).

2) CTRL+ALT+F1, login as your user and:

Next remove the firmware

Reboot

Post the contents of ~/dmesg.1 and ~/Xorg.0.log.1 using [code] tags.

Nothing out of the ordinary there.

Have you created any xorg configuration files? e.g. /etc/X11/xorg.conf or anything similar?

bulkley: I tried the nomodeset, but couldn't start gdm3 or gnome with it.

Before Jessie I used Wheezy, in fallback mode because I wanted to use the traditional panel. Before that it was Squeezy. I've always used the firmware-linux-nonfree on this laptop. I have a memory of that Wheezy also looked distorted in gnome-shell, but working in fallback mode. on Jessie it's on both gnome-shell and fallback mode.

cynwulf: no I haven't created any configuration files.
