Okay, that tells you that the kernel is not the problem. Your other messages are pointing at initramfs-tools. Try apt-get -f install initramfs-tools. I think you did that already but it won't hurt trying again.

Okay. Did that. Got the same error(s). I did it once in a root terminal, and then again by pressing CTL+ALT-F1 and logging in as root. Don't know if that makes any difference, but the results were the same.

Code: Select all

I'd also try to reinstall
apt-get install --reinstall initramfs-tools
or similar.

Like said above: I would sure try aptitude in such situations. It is better to solve tricky problems.

I am not sure if it will burn the house down, but i would remove and then install initramfs-tools (before rebooting).

typo:
Code: Select all
$ ls /usr/sbin/update=-initramfs

should be
Code: Select all
$ ls /usr/sbin/update-initramfs

and just in case it's a symlink, as mine is,
Code: Select all
$ ls -l /usr/sbin/update-initramfs

I happen to have archived four versions of initramfs-tools:

initramfs-tools_0.116_all.deb
initramfs-tools_0.117_all.deb
initramfs-tools_0.118_all.deb
initramfs-tools_0.119_all.deb

Would it be a colossal mistake to try installing one of them?
