Jessie: Problem with initramfs-tools?

Postby twerple » June 13th, 2015, 8:48 pm

This began a couple of months ago when I updated Jessie with Synaptic. Since then, I get the same error every time I update. I don't understand why it's happening, nor do I know what to do about it.

Here's the text of the error(s). Can anyone shed some light?
By the way, the system seems to work okay.

Conflict maybe? Can you post your /etc/apt/sources.list?

And there's the problem. Did you read the release notes before upgrading to that release?

I agree, one shouldn't do upgrades with a GUI, even a good one.

I'm wondering if twerple's version of initramfs-tools has a conflict with linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64. A search for initramfs-tools conflict with linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 produces lots of hits and bug reports. Unfortunately, the one marked "Solved" is over at debian.net which is down.

That's why I'd like to see his sources.list before suggesting anything else.

It's probably a half upgraded system - e.g. an upgrade without the dist-upgrade hence the initramfs-tools conflict.

Thanks for the replies.

To clarify, this install of Jessie dates from the time that Wheezy went stable. At that time I changed my sources.list in Wheezy to the following:

Code: Select all
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
deb-src http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free

deb http://security.debian.org jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org jessie/updates main contrib non-free #Added by software-properties

I thought I was following the notes from debian.org on upgrading to Jessie.

In any case, that's been some time ago that I made that change, and I've been riding the update train with Jessie ever since. There have been no problems along the way except for this quirky thing.

I hope this explains the situation a little better.

What have you tried so far to fix this?

The nature of the "update train" is that you can go many miles with 3/4 of the train and then realise that you need to go back for the rest...

What is the output of:

Code: Select all
$ uname -a

To begin with, put a # in front of the deb-src lines. Those are for bringing down source packages and just slow down your average apt-gets.

When doing a major upgrade, such as Wheezy to Jessie, I always exit X and work from a console. I don't want anything running that I won't be using. For the major upgrade I hash # everything in my sources.list except
Code: Select all
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ jessie main
. That's all. Then do
Code: Select all
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade
. Reboot. Does everything work? If so, do
Code: Select all
apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
. Reboot and test again. Next, add contrib to the source line and do it all again. When it is all done you can un-block the second line in your sources.list.

A word about non-free. You only need it for proprietary blobs for drivers like Realtek. Once you have them you might as well block non-free. I do the same for special sources.

Now about your initramfs-tools problem. Go through the steps above. That was enough to clear a similar problem over at FDN. If it doesn't clear your problem I have another step but let's get the basics put together first.

Not that much, except to look around. The error indicates that initramfs-tools is not installed or unconfigured, but synaptic says that it is.

What is the output of:

Code: Select all
$ uname -a

twerple~$ uname -a
Linux jessie 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1 (2015-05-24) x86_64 GNU/Linux

I will reply to suggestions above when I can get to it. Might take a day.

Thanks.
