Setup squeeze with Ext3 or Ext4?  Topic is solved

Postby ccc » May 27th, 2012, 2:19 am

Hi

I'd like to setup squeeze with these partitions:
Code: Select all
/
swap
/var
/tmp
/home

Should I use EXT3 or EXT4 for these partitions?

My root is ext3 and home is ext4 (to reduce fsck times on a large drive with lots of video).

I would probably go for ext4 on all of them, but would not know if that is the right approach.

Ext4 is a good choice for desktop systems. Currently it has a slight performance penalty with some database workloads and installing debian packages. It will be much faster on other workloads and has a blindingly fast filesystem check. Basically the decision comes down to:

Do I hate constant slow filesystem checks every 30 boots or so? If so, use ext4. :)

It's usually best to mount /tmp with a tmpfs.

My experience from when I had a slower machine (Pentium IV, 1.5 GB RAM) is that ext4 was noticeably faster for my desktop usage.

Ext4 is definitely faster than Ext3 during working and even during the check disk.
