Oracle VirtualBox Kernel Driver not installed (rc=-1908)

Postby btforensics » June 18th, 2018, 2:04 pm

Hello Debianuserforums,

I currently installed Oracle Virtual box to my Debian "Stretch" Machine (Cinnamon).

Initially I followed the instructions from the link below to install Oracle Virtual Box 5.1
https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/

I plan to install another Debian as a guest VDI image in Oracle Virtual Box. Followed the on screen instructions in creating the image in Oracle Virtual Box.

However, when I try to boot the image to proceed with the installation, I keep on getting this error:

Oracle VirtualBox Kernel Driver not installed (rc=-1908)
The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing

'/sbin/vboxconfig/'
as root.

where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) - The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT.

I executed vboxconfig, encountered a message that "modprobe vboxdrv failed…"

I uninstalled Oracle VirtualBox 5.1 and installed 5.2 but I keep on getting the same error.

I ran the dmesg command and got the following message:
vboxdrv: disagrees about version of symbol cpu_tlbstate
vboxdrv: Unkown symbol cpu_tlbstate (err-22)

I've tried multiple solutions I've found from the internet but none is working.

Thank you for your help!

I don't know enough about virtualbox to be of much assistance, however this error message may provide some more clues.

If you can load the kernel module directly and then list all modules, it should give some more verbose output, which you are free to post up here.

After researching, I found this article
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/solved-virt ... date/24875

It says to do the following
sudo pacman -Sy virtualbox virtualbox-host-dkms
sudo pacman -R linux44-virtualbox-host-modules

Now I'm having issue with pacman, did more troubleshooting and successfully installed pacman, but now I'm getting this error when running pacman
warning: no 'XferCommand' configured
error: no usable package repositories configured

It seems that everytime I try to fix something I will encounter new issues. Maybe I need to install the other Debian packages
debian-9.4.0-amd64-DVD-2.iso
debian-9.4.0-amd64-DVD-3.iso

Can anyone tell me how to install these packages?

Thank you

After doing research, I was now able to resolve the issue.

I executed the following commands:
apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade

Restarted, and the issue has been solved!

Thank you!
