fix control-D during booting

Postby prudra » February 17th, 2017, 2:28 am

Recently my 6- years old Dell Vostro 1014 laptop with Jessie 8.7.1 OS has got a disease. It can boot only after pressing control-D and the error message was that there was error in /home . After thus booting I ran as /root fsck /home and was informed that the home partition on /dev/sda7 is busy. How shall I proceed?

check the filesystem with /home not being mounted.
Not sure if umount it is an option, using a live system sure is.

Try fsck from a live disk.
May the FORK be with you!

From a live medium I ran #fsck /dev/sda and got the message `Bad magic number in superblock while trying to open /dev/sda'. Does that mean a hardware problem to be treated by a repairman?

It may well be that your hard drive is about to die. It might be wise to back up any important data you have on it ASAP and maybe get a new HDD.
