Two volume controls on top panel?

Postby caulfield » July 29th, 2012, 8:01 pm

Hi!

My prob. now is, that i have two volume controls in the top panel (two speaker icons, one between the keyboard language sign and blutooth sign, and one at the end, properly. The first one only shows the volume, which i can turn down or up, and the other at the end can be used for settings, and even those are different, not the ordinary mixer like it was before).

How has this happened? I didn't touch the sound preferences at all.

Squeeze 64bit.

+ i have another problem.

I start Rhythmbox, it plays normally, and then i start YT simultaniously, and usually both sounds played normally, but now, the RB sound turns off, and the Youtube sound turns on. After that it's not possible to get Rhythmbox to play a song any more.

Plus, the first speaker icon i wrote about - when i move the cursor up to it, it says 'dummy output'.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Have you checked top, htop and pstree to see what's going on? How about dmesg?
Edit: What destop are you using, btw?
I just got kicked out of McDonalds...

I see you have pulseaudio installed. Did you need it for a particular application that you use?
Try this (root) to see if pulseaudio is the problem:
Code: Select all
killall pulseaudio

If that doesn't terminate pulseaudio, run top again and take note of the PID for pulseaudio, then as root:
Code: Select all
kill -9 <PID>

(if it's PID is 12345, then it would be kill -9 12345)

Looks like you're also having some power management issues...
Don't worry about htop. It's just another top you can install if you like.

Hey!

killall worked, my mixer looks reverted back to normal.

Now, is it enough if i remove pulseaudio from synaptic? Will it fix the problem? + What kind of power management issues do i have (i don't understand he output i have written) and how could i fix it?

Thank you, you've been of very very much assistance!!!

No problem. I would go ahead and remove the package. It's interfering with alsa anyway, which works just fine.
Since we're in a cli mood, let aptitude do it for you. :D
Code: Select all
aptitude purge pulseaudio

This jumped out at me:
Code: Select all
[ 4.600308] PM: Starting manual resume from disk
[ 4.600312] PM: Resume from partition 8:5
[ 4.600313] PM: Checking hibernation image.
[ 4.600440] PM: Error -22 checking image file
[ 4.600442] PM: Resume from disk failed.

Really a suspend/hibernate issue. Have you had any hangs when you try to resume? If it's not an issue, you could dig some more or even just let it slide.
There was something about fan control in there, too. If it's running hot (or has ever done a thermal shutdown) you may want to start a new thread about it.

Hmm, no. When i close the lid on the laptop, it turns back on to the login screen without problems. The only issue i had with suspend is that i prolonged the 'go to sleep' behaviour, because the computer won't recognize me running VLC, and tries to turn off the screen every 5 minutes, which is annoying :)

No heat or fan problems, cool breeze coming out of the side of my computer since i cleaned it, it gets a bit warmer under the touchpad in the front, but not hot. Hasn't shut down because of heat ever.

Do you recognize any symptoms in that description, cause i don't know what i'm looking for here :D
