Not sure if the version in Squeeze already had blur effects, but if so, try disabling them. They can be quite resource hungry.

You need xorg.conf in squeeze in order to enable the composite extension, if I recall correctly. In testing/unstable it should be enabled by default.

It honestly shouldn't be that slow though, I wouldn't be surprised if it's still using the software rasteriser, what is the output of this now that you've got it all set up?
