Understanding Debian (visual)

Tweaking a computer is fun, but some people actually use their Debian system to accomplish various tasks. If you are one of those, post your trials and triumphs here.

Understanding Debian (visual)

Hey, I just found an interesting visual on G+ on the linux tag, but to see an image that's readable you have to go here:

I would never recommend a "general user" to use Testing, especially if they are new to Linux.
When I just think of all the small and irritating bugs I encountered
-- No suspend/hibernate, random programmes cease to print, scanner suddenly unrecognised,
display managers stop having permission to shut down...
Sorry if that sort of functionality only appeals to "conservative users"

You think these things don't happen in Sid or Testing? They do.

No, no. (well, i don't know, never used them). It just reminded me of my Ubuntu experience. Everything is nice, but there are so many small irritating glitches that annoy me.

The image is nicely done. 8-)
But I am sceptical of its usefulness. :?

+1

testing breaks more often that unstable. If you run unstable, use some common sense and check for bugs with apt-listbugs, you have a better system than testing. If you run a mixed testing/unstable system, you have a better system than testing. There is no testing/unstable system for the "average user", anything involving the two requires maintenance and that the user accept that there will be problems and work around them.

I encounter problems in unstable on a regular basis - it's not obvious because I don't bitch about them at FDN and expect everyone else to solve it for me. I simply get on with it, search the web, read through bug reports, downgrade to older versions of packages, etc until the problem is resolved.

I admire all you people who have the skill to use Unstable. I would probably be pulling out my hair after the first set of up-dates.

It's not as daunting as it may seem. When I say "regular problems", I mean things which I don't really consider to be problems, but some users obviously do. Minor stuff really. I call something like fglrx breaking minor - to some it's a deal breaker...

The breakage isn't that horrible if you're on a holiday or use a machine just for gaming or surfing the web. But if you really need that form printed ASAP and that one programme just decided it can't print anymore for some reason, the last thing I wan is hunt bugs because I don't have the time for it.
