For model MFC-J4420DW, I used the Driver Install Tool listed on Brother Solutions Center support page -- http://goo.gl/v0JaFA.

Download link and instructions here:
http://support.brother.com/g/b/download ... &type3=625

The install script resolved all dependencies and architecture requirements, resulting in successful install of printer and scanner!

Update -- I've seen drastically increased battery drain and xsane freezes (total system lockup). I've purged all drivers, reinstalled, same problems ... on HP Elitebook 8540w.

So, after getting nowhere with brother support:

"We endeavor to help as much as possible but there are many variations of Linux distributions and each is customizable to you unique environment. Unfortunately we cannot support each version independently. We provide a selection of available drivers on our support page that you can download and configure to meet your needs."

I dist-upgraded to stretch and reinstalled the printer. Everything works now without system freeze nor battery drain.

yay Stretch ;)

cheers
