live-build basics: Make your own live-cd or usb-hdd

Postby fsmithred » February 17th, 2011, 5:27 am

Here's the link to the howto (part 1)
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=185

Got it the way I want it now. Damned fifth column in the code box was a problem.

Found a typo in the second codebox. In the last example there is an option
Code: Select all
----archive-areas
I think that should be only 2 minus signs.
Thanks for that HowTo, really good.

Wheezy Live HDD

Postby ccc » February 27th, 2012, 2:02 am

hi

I have some questions to this manual:

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=185

How it should work using live-config parameters, for example: hostname, autologin in xfce, customizing locales etc. on wheezy hdd?

I haven't tried live-build in wheezy yet, and I've hardly tried wheezy at all. In squeeze and lenny, I've added options to the 'lb config' line such as the following:
Code: Select all
--hostname debian-live --bootappend-live "autologin xautologin"
Check 'man lb_config' in wheezy if those are no longer valid.

For the locale setting, you might try adding the following to the bootappend-live option above:
Code: Select all
live-config=locales,keyboard-configuration locales=de_DE.UTF-8 keyboard-layouts=de
using the locale code that you want. If that doesn't do what you want, we'll need to get dzz on this thread.

Howto build a completely NON persistent debian live usb-hdd?
Is it just not create a separate "home" partition?

Correct.

Note that if you use a usb-hdd image, when you boot the usb-stick, the system will be read-only, but if you mount the stick on a running system, it will be read-write. It's possible to edit files or even replace the /live folder (containing the operating system) with a different one.

That won't be true if you use an isohybrid image, which is always read-only. A couple of oddities of using isohyrid are worth mentioning: you won't be able to create additional partitions (maybe that's a benefit in your case), and if you ever want to re-format the stick, you might need to write zeros to it and create a new partition table first.

BTW is iso hybrid image more secure than usb-hdd (hdd) for secure online banking?
