Great post by cynwulf!
I am thinking cynwulf has spent way too much time time thinking about this.

I don't think we need a special treasurer's account as they should have no permissions any different from an ordinary member (no admin rights, no moderator rights).

Good point! I was going to argue that they would need special powers because they have the DNS and hosting access but that doesn't actually matter. The treasurer would just have to accept the fact that he is the hosting/DNS contact person and his financial account is the one tied to the bills but that he has no power regarding the actual forum.

If we can then take away moderator privileges from the admin we have three equal categories (not levels) of staff - all with different roles, all equal with no overlaps.

Perfect. We have the treasurer for a couple financial tasks, the admin for a couple maintenance tasks, the custodians for a couple maintenance tasks. Done.

we need a strong constitution that we are all bound to, which we all uphold and which no one is exempt from
Exactly. Something that clearly lays everything out and leaves no room for any member to misunderstand how things work around here.

Lets git er done

The treasurer has the single biggest trump card - the board is in his name. That already places the treasurer in a very strong position, admin/moderator rights or not.

- The treasurer needs access to the hosting and DNS and that's it. The treasurer's priority is collecting donations and paying the hosting - once that's done the treasurer is a member again until next time (or until the admin goes berserk...). As he wont' appear in "the team" listing, members might need to know who the designated (elected) treasurer is - don't want new people sending money to some imposter. No colours, but a title? I don't like titles/ranks much... I prefer an obvious announcement "this is the current treasurer [link to profile] - if you sent money to the wrong guy - tough shit" - or something along those lines.

- The admin needs access to the hosting and the admincp, nothing more. If the board were busier I would suggest two admins, as it's stands we're ok.

- The custodians need limited moderator rights and limited admincp access - no edit and no delete powers, no powers of infraction etc. All custodian needs to do is move a thread from A to B and to ban and delete spammers and their accounts. Spam is a custodian's no. 1 responsibility. If we don't clean spam in a timely manner, the spammers will be here in greater numbers like flies around shit. They should have as little powers as is possible - but if their job becomes a ball ache, they need to be given the tools to do the job.

Maybe we should have a vote on who gets to be Piggy? It's not a party until someone has their glasses broken and then gets busted in their gourd with a well-aimed rock. On a side note, when we got all pc over violent hot chick and Lord Joey Hess's opinion on our existence is when we slipped a little.ymmv, of course...

The characters and events of that classic are not the most important message of that book. IMO the 'message' is that the unbridled 'freedom' to act on whatever whim arises is not really freedom at all but just childish acting out with potentially disastrous consequences. True freedom comes with self-control and an awareness of the potential consequences of one's actions. Sometimes that maturity is sorely lacking on this board. At least that's my perception . . .

I thought that's what made it fun. Where else could you drop an rm --rf bomb as advice to an ubuntard and get away with it. Viva la difference! All in all, everyone has chilled a lot. I don't see the issue at this point in time. And yeah, I read the books and got the underlying message. So... no second on a designated Piggy? Bummer.
