switching to devuan repos from debian jessie-based distros

Postby fig1 » September 14th, 2015, 4:41 am

hello. thatsbetterinit here. sorry for my previous exit. i had been very caught up in trying to figure out what i was going to do about debians init stuff, and the (reasonably had) negativity here was starting to bother me.

someone attacked another guy here, i thought they were talking to me, i left. no hard feelings, i hope.

i now take debian-based distros and switch the repos to devuan repos, and update to get rid of systemd (and keep it out.) cups, alas, still wants libsystemd. but im happy to wait for beta to fix that.

im less familiar with fsmithreds distro, though i believe he posts to the devuan mailinglist.

i also have devuan installed on a few machines from the installer. i currently mod /v/devuan on voat. hi to golinux if youre here, i see you on the mailing list from time to time.

Here's a link to fsmithred's (Refracta) unofficial devuan-alpha2-amd64-live iso that boots to xfce

And here's a synopsis of changes he made to the alpha2.

There is also a Refracta forum.

Live disk worked fine. Will be installing shortly . . .

love it. i considered figuan, and decided on this.

uen^ap :umop apisdn

ive read most of the mailling list (some of the early months in the archive ive missed) and i believe you said you dont (want to?) code.

is that absolutely -zero- interest, or could you possibly be tempted? have you tried it? have you ever wished to be able?

this concludes the green-eggs-and-ham portion of my reply.

thanks again :)

You may not know that many official deb packages e.g. cups which now have *systemd* deps have already been compiled and tested without. If not available yet in devuan they are in some 3rd party repos. More info on this is posted at the refracta forum.

Yes.. all 17 pages of it.

My etc/apt/sources.list.d/nosystemd.list:

Code: Select all
# "3rd party" repos hosting nosystemd packages at April 2015
# Uncomment/edit to suit then <apt update>

deb http://angband.pl/debian/ nosystemd main

deb http://exegnulinux.net/nosystemd/ jessie main

# enable for eudev
#deb http://exegnulinux.net/nosystemd/ experimental main

As we all should already know, use 3rd party repos at your own risk and don't expect devuan to support them. Browse them and see what is there. Most have sources posted with the debs. My devuan-based bootstrap-installed jessie with XFCE4 and TDE plus some unofficial extras works just fine without even libsystemd0 (and I can print with cups)

cheers. you have a long reply complete with a tl;dr (in case you prefer to start with the tl;dr, or skim it.)

thats wonderful. even more than libsystemd-less printing i miss live cds. i have yet to try a 32 bit live devuan. there is this: http://mirrors.gnuinos.org/?dir=DEVUAN-BASED%20IMAGES

"The web site is not updated, but this distribution will be definitely based on Devuan." https://lists.dyne.org/lurker/message/2 ... n.html#dng

i havent tried it yet.
